The Harper government has just made another move to offend the Vietnamese-Canadian community. I am sending the letter below to my MP, and anyone else is welcome to copy it and send it to their MP. You can read all of the details about this issue here: https://onedrive.live/redir?resid=8DBA4E10AE3D78AA!4982&authkey=!APUrHsj2px76unw&ithint=file%2cpdf «Address» House of Commons Ottawa, Ontario K1A 0A6 Dear «Salutation»: Re: Bill S-219 Journey to Freedom Day Act I am a member of the Vietnamese-Canadian community in your riding. Bill S-219 has just been tabled in the house. This bill insults Vietnam’s heritage as an independent nation, something the Vietnamese people have fought for repeatedly throughout their 3,000 year history. The bill also slights the Canadian military who had a major role in bringing Vietnamese refugees to Canada. Most of the Vietnamese-Canadian community will be offended that the Government of Canada wants them to join the former Saigon military officers in commemorating the fall of Saigon. The vast majority of former boat people identify with Canada and will never parade around the streets of Canada with the flag of the former Saigon regime. I suggest that the bill be turned into a thank you to the Canadian forces by changing the commemoration date to July 27, the date in 1979 when Operation MAGNET II began bringing Vietnamese boat people to Canada. Yours sincerely,
