The HeartPrint writing workshop is not meeting today as the library is closed for Martin Luther King Jr. Day. But here is your assignment, we are looking at Ekphrastic writing or giving a give voice to artwork (make ‘em talk) . This writing exercise is in conjunction with ArtTales contest – more info below - Our next workshops on 2/3 and 2/17 will be mostly focused on these pieces. The workshop runs from 4 to 6 on the second floor of the library. Right next to where this art hangs on the wall. “In Praise of Shadows” is the inspiration for selecting the six works from Ventura’s Municipal Art Collection on display at the E.P. Foster Library for the sixth annual Art Tales creative writing contest in 2014. “Only when it is dark enough, can you see the stars,” wrote Martin Luther King. “Everyone carries a shadow,” said Carl Jung. “In spite of its function as a reservoir for human darkness–or perhaps because of this–the shadow is the seat of creativity.” We hope the hidden or shadowy aspects of these featured artworks will offer rich opportunities for authors everywhere to “bring to write” personal and cultural landscapes as poems and stories The City of Ventura is pleased to sponsor the sixth annual creative contest open to all writers worldwide in partnership with E.P. Foster Library located at 651 E Main St in downtown Ventura. The contest invites imaginative writers of all ages to compose a short story or poem (500 words maximum) inspired by one of the artworks currently on exhibit at the library from the Municipal Art Collection. These selections from the City Hall collection are rotated annually to a special second floor exhibit space near the library’s rear (childrens) entrance in an effort to make them more accessible to the community.
