The Hijriyah New Year,... the Islamic New Year, is not an ied (celebration) in Islam (we only have two Ied/celebrations: Ied Al-Fitri and Ied Al-Adha).... rather it is a historical and monumental moment in Islam. The years of Hijriyah lunar calendar doesnt have numbers before, it was only named, particularly by great events of the year. In example: The birth year of prophet Muhammad SAW is named as The Year of The Elephant. It was because in that year, before the prophet was born, the Elephant army of Abrahah attacked Kaba in Mecca (he wanted to destroy Kaba). The 0 Hijriyah year was at the moment of the moving (= Hijrah) of moslems from the city of Mecca to Madina. The Madina is the city where pilars of Islamic society was first built. It is also the city where verses of Quran -- concerning society -- was revealed (in Mecca the verses of Quran that was revealed were mainly on the core of the belief: Oneness of God/= Tawheed teachings). Many of those who moved were leaving their beloved family, relatives, belongings, and lands, for the sake of obedience to Allah SWT and His prophet SAW. For the better.
