The Holy Qur’an is a compilation of the verbal revelations given to the Holy Prophet Muhammad (sa) over a period of about twenty three years. The Holy Qur’an is the Holy Book or the Scripture of the Muslims. It lays down for them the law and commandments, codes for their social and moral behavior, and contains a comprehensive religious philosophy. The language of the Holy Qur’an is Arabic. Guidance for the Righteous “This is a perfect Book; there is no doubt in it; it is a guidance for the righteous.” (Ch.2 v.3) Guidance for the Righteous The First Revelation “Convey thou in the name of thy Lord Who created, Created man from a clot of blood. Convey! And thy Lord is Most Generous, Who taught man by the pen, Taught man what he knew not.” (Ch.96 v.2-6) Preserved Forever “Verily, We Ourself have sent down this Exhortation, and most surely We will be its Guardian.” (Ch.15 v.10) The text of the Holy Qur’an has remained unchanged over the past 1400 years. Millions of copies of the Holy Qur’an circulating in the world today are all identical down to a single letter. And this is not strange since God says in the Holy Qur’an that He Himself will guard this book. The Holy Qur’an has been preserved by memorization and inscription. Millions of Muslims have memorized the Holy Qur’an in its entirety. All Muslims endeavour to read the entire text in Arabic at least once in their life, many complete the recitation at least once a year. Parts of the text are also read in the 5 daily prayers by Muslims throughout the world. Unlike other scriptures the original text (in Arabic) is revered and protected. Chapters and Verses Chapters and Verses The Holy Qur’an is divided into 114 Surahs or Chapters and each Chapter consists of individual Ayaat or verses. There are in total 6,348 verses in the Holy Qur’an. The Surahs are of varying lengths, some consisting of a few lines while others run for many pages. Surah al Baqarah (Ch.2 ) is the longest Chapter comprising 287 verses while Surah al Kauthar( Ch. 108) is the shortest with only four verses. Noble Qur’an Noble Qur’an “This is a perfect Book; there is no doubt in it; it is a guidance for the righteous.” (Ch.2 v.3) “That this is indeed a noble Qur’an, In a well-preserved Book,” (Ch.56 v.78-79) “It is a revelation from the Lord of the worlds. Is it this Divine discourse that you would reject?” (Ch.56 v.81-82) “Therein are lasting commandments.” (Ch.98 v.4) “Allah has sent down the best Message in the form of a Book, whose verses are mutually supporting and repeated in diverse forms…” (Ch.39 v.24) Trust “Verily, We offered the Trust to the heavens and the earth and the mountains, but they refused to bear it and were afraid of it. But man bore it. Indeed, he is capable of being unjust to, and neglectful of, himself.” (Ch.33 v.73) Challenge “Say, ‘If mankind and the Jinn gathered together to produce the like of this Qur’an, they could not produce the like thereof, even though they should help one another.’ And surely, We have set forth for mankind in various ways all kinds of similitudes in this Qur’an, but most men would reject everything but disbelief.” (Ch.17 v.89-90) Blessing and Mercy “And this is a Book which We have sent down; it is full of blessings. So follow it, and guard against sin that you may be shown mercy;” (Ch.6 v.156) “And this is a Book which We have revealed, full of blessings, to fulfil that which preceded it …” (Ch.6 v.93) Translations of the Holy Qur’an Translations of the Holy Qur’an The Holy Qur’an is the revered scripture of over 1 billion Muslims around the world.
