“The Holy Spirit, whom he richly poured out upon us, through Jesus Christ our Saviour”. Titus 3:6 WB People want wealth. They desire to be rich. Dreams of instant wealth prompt them to enter lotteries, steal, and often get taken for a ride. But the dream of wealth also makes some people work hard, use their brains and “get on”. You could almost say that it is billions of people working and scheming for wealth that makes the world go round! In the end most of them get by until they go on pension and then hope they make it to the end. Paul knew where true wealth lay. In writing to Titus he described God’s gift of the Holy Spirit as “richly poured out”. The Holy Spirit is God’s wealth given away - freely! The word he uses means “to become rich”, “to be enriched”, “to be abundantly furnished with” and many other things all referring to wealth. He knew the people of Crete were avidly seeking this world’s wealth. “But God has poured his riches on you - the Holy Spirit”, he was saying. Think of that wealth. It brings you to God. It forms Christ in you. Think of the fruit of the Holy Spirit - he makes you into a loving person; he gives you peace; he brings you joy; he changes you into a patient person; fills you with kindness; makes you good when on your own you were mainly bad; gives you a towering faith; rids you of pride making you humble; and gives you control of yourself. On top of all these he gives you some of the twenty-seven “gifts of the Spirit”. How can anyone hanker after silver and gold when offered this wealth? Enjoy your riches. PRAYER THOUGHT: Lord, thank you for all the riches you have poured upon me.
