The Honduran Connection A Political Essay By C. G. Plaskon I had set out to make this a Swiftian satire not unlike his harshest political piece, “A Modest Proposal”. I don’t think I have the skill to accomplish that but I did wish to relate a story to my Liberal friends and ask them a few questions about this modern wave of immigrants into America; distinct of course, from the waves of immigrants who worked and saved and bought passage to America on ships and passed through Ellis Island legally and who then made their away across this country making contributions along the way. I begin by telling the story of Juan Raymond Lopez from Honduras, a quite young fellow who sat in the Immigration office in Atlanta, Georgia recently with his two young boys. Mr. Lopez is an illegal immigrant; I prefer that term because it is closer to the truth than the Liberal “undocumented person” label. Mr. Lopez had the guts to show up at the Immigration office only because our President, whose chief administrative responsibility is to uphold the law, changed the law (he is not supposed to do that) thus giving Mr. Lopez a protective shield to not only remain in the United States unmolested, but to qualify for a state driver’s license and a work permit. Now, Mr. Lopez who was asked about his status said that “it is really tough not having a driver’s license” but he has already been driving on the roads of Georgia without a license and he has been arrested twice for drunk driving and released twice though here illegally. So, here are the first two questions for my Liberal friends; these are yes or no questions, by the way. Do you support the President of the United States changing law outside the Constitutional process for political purposes and do you support the release back into the community, rather than deportation, of an illegal alien who has been arrested for drunk driving?; again – yes or no please. Let me pause for a moment and make a case that the shield that was put up for Mr. Lopez by the President was not humanitarian at all. Let me yank that “let them out of the shadows” rug out from under the Liberal case. The legitimizing of nearly eleven million illegals of mostly Hispanic descent, firstly, pumps up the future voting block for the President’s party. It further provides the equivalent of cannon fodder for the filthy, demeaning, low paying jobs that will have these folks on the backs of the taxpayer at any rate with food stamps and Medicaid, and it is about new revenue to the treasury by taxing their miserable wages and charging them $500 each for a work permit. Oh, yes this is about votes and money my dear Liberal friends. Multiply the estimated five million work permits times $500.00 – my Casio can’t do it but it seems to me the fees come to about 2.5 billion dollars out of their tattered pockets. Well, isn’t that charitable! I have one more question for my Liberal friends. Now that Mr. Lopez is going to get a Georgia driver’s license he is going to be on the road much, much more and I doubt that he is going to stop drinking. If and when Mr. Lopez (it’s only a matter of time) “T bones” some innocents at an intersection by flying though a red light, will you consider yourself complicit in their deaths; again, a yes or no question. Let me answer for you because if you said yes to the former questions you dare not say no to the later.
