The Horror Fan Forum: TWO EVIL EYES! It can be argued that every film by Dario is deeply personal, of course, but there is something unique about the one-two punch of OPERA and TWO EVIL EYES, for these back-to-back productions pay explicit homage to the influences that shaped Darios own dreams. In OPERA, he offered his giallo variation on Macbeth, and with TWO EVIL EYES, tribute is made to another seminal force in his life: Edgar Allan Poe. It is 1990, and Dario has approached his friend, and DAWN OF THE DEAD collaborator, George Romero to team up once again -- this time not as director/co-writers/producer -- but as dual directors, two seers offering paired readings of their predecessor Mister Poe. Darios half of the equation, The Black Cat, continues OPERAs explicit fascination with the gaze, focusing on photographer Rod Ushers compulsion to photograph terrible things, and the awful ends this imp of the perverse will lead him to. With nods to many of Poes tales and poems scattered throughout the screenplay, the film is also notable for being shot entirely in the U.S., a first for Dario -- and shot in a newly stripped-down style, to suit this surprising change of scenery. A new decade again brings a new vision -- as if with this move to Poes homeland and back into his visionary roots, he wished to cut away the elaborations hed perfected in Europe, get down to the bone, and begin again.
