The House of Little Dogs was a house of little dogs long before it became THE House of Little Dogs. We have been drawn to the fixer uppers for years. While fixing them up, we would talk about finding an adopter to provide a forever home, then we would laugh and laugh because we already knew he or she was already a member of the pack--what we now refer to as the permanent sanctuary. It was a slow evolution to the point wherein Chompsky became our first official dog up for adoption. But the first attempt, our gateway potential adoptee, was Buster. Buster was a long legged, ancient, Jack Russell mix. Sprindale Animal Control saved him from a ditch, and after teeth cleaning and parasite cleansing courtesy of Springdale Animal Services and the Southwest Vet clinic, we took him home with the intention of finding him a forever family. Buster was the perfect incarnation of what a gentleman is and should be. Calm and gentle of spirit, he was always respectful of others in the house. We fell in love of course, but girded our convictions to pursue what is becoming our life mission. In preparation for his coming out party, we took him in for a senior wellness exam (blood panel, x-rays, etc.). Sadly, they found a lung tumor, most likely cancerous, and because of its location, quite likely metastasized. He was in no distress, so we put him on a mild pain medication and took him home. Yes, home. He could live out his days surrounded by his new family. And live them out he did with his signature grace and nobility, but never stuffy, as he developed a fawn like gallop when the mood moved him. We only shared his life for a few months, but his passing evoked the deep sorrow most associated with the loss of a dear, old friend. Our structure is of wood, walls and shingles. The House of Little Dogs is built on the spirits of those that dwell, and have dwelled, here. Thank you, Buster, for opening the gate.
