The Howling Dog? -OR- Wizards Hat? So where exactly is the mysterious rock named Wizards Hat? It is a question that when asked to strangers and some locals on the beach in Bandon, some get it right, and some dont. Others give this rock a completely different name depending on where you stand before it and allow your imagination to determine the shape. With any common imagination, this rock from the north takes on the appearance of a standing Sea Lion. From the east, the rock takes on the shape of a wizards hat, and when viewed from the south, the rock resembles a howling dog. The Howling Dog rock is often given the name Wizards Hat because it does resemble a wizards hat from the east, a shape that looks more like a wizards hat than the actual Wizards Hat which is located in the cluster of rocks south of this rock and south the Face Rock parking lot. The towering rock in this photo IS the HOWLING DOG even though from this view, it looks more like a wizards hat, it is not. Much like the infamous inkblot tests, different people see different things. Look harder and you can even see the resemblance of a standing Sea Lion. But dont be fooled. This is still the Howling Dog, no matter which way and which side you look it. And, by-the-way, according to the Indian legend, the Howling Dog rock has a name. His name is Komax. So what is the point you ask? It is really just a rock! The point is, it has an official name, no matter which way you look at it. facebook/StevenMichaelPhotographyOregon instagram/stevenmichaelphotography
