The Hungers of our Hearts Dr. Morton Kelsey was a spiritual - TopicsExpress

The Hungers of our Hearts Dr. Morton Kelsey was a spiritual author who had a particular interest in relating the insights of depth psychology to religious experience. As he traveled around giving seminars and lectures, he asked people to spend some time thinking about the question: “What are the ten deepest hungers of my heart? What are the ten things I want most in life?” “Three things emerged as by far the most common: to know God, to feel God’s love, and to experience real love and intimacy with other human beings. There is a hunger in the human heart to know the sense of worth which only human and divine love can bring.” Think about this question for yourself. Do you share these same longings? I believe the longing to know love and be loved is something we never outgrow. Whether we are a teen-ager or middle-aged, or a senior, we share a human need to make contact with another seeking soul, or with what all souls seek, e.g. God. That is the human condition. It is good to know that Christian community is a partial answer to this longing. We know God not in isolation but mostly through meaningful relationships with people, which for the most part develop over time. To be sure, God is revealed through Word and Sacrament but also in Christian community. I believe that we can gain things through relationships with people that we gain in no other way. The radical good news of the gospel is that our human love is only a partial and imperfect reflection of the love that God has for us. In God’s love there are no shadows or imperfections. In fact, we need to know and experience God’ love in our hearts, before we can truly love others for who they are, not for who we need them to be for our sake. Can we open our hearts to the love that God has shown us in Christ, and in response learn to love and care for others as God has created them? Pastor Darryl
