The IRS wants you to be aware that an extension of time to file your return does not grant you any extension of time to pay your tax liability. If you are not able to file your federal individual income tax return by the due date, you may be able to get an automatic 6-month extension of time to file, but you must send a payment with the extension form in the amount that you expect your tax liability to be. File all tax returns that are due, regardless of whether or not you can pay in full to avoid penalties and interest for not filing on time. If you are receiving a refund on your tax return you do not need to file for an extension. You have three years from the original due date to file and claim a refund and no penalty will be assessed.
