The Independent National Electoral Commission has approved 88 observer groups to participate in the 2015 general elections slated for February 14 and 28, 2015. Chairman of the commission, Prof. Attahiru Jega, told one of our correspondents on Tuesday. The commission said the approval of the groups was done following their compliance with the requirements and guidelines it earlier issued for accreditation of observers. Presidential and National Assembly elections would hold on February 14 while Governorship and House of Assembly elections would take place two weeks later. INEC said in a statement posted on its website on Friday added that groups were to obtain and complete form EPMC 02 for the election between January 15 and 26, 2015. It said the forms could be obtained at the Elections and Party Monitoring Department, INEC Headquarters, Maitama, Abuja between 8am-4pm from Mondays through Fridays. Meanwhile, the commission has warned that observer groups other than the accredited ones would be handed over to law enforcement agencies if found on election days. Among the local observers approved for the exercise are New Partnership for African Development, Centre for Strategic Conflict Management, Global Agenda for Total Emancipation, Police Service Commission, Election Monitor and African Peace Union. Some foreign missions like United States of America Embassy, Japan Embassy, Switzerland Embassy, and embassies of France, Canada and Ireland, were also listed as foreign observers. The commission has also fixed 8am to 1pm as the period for accreditation of voters for the general elections. Jega stated that the commission had received the funds it needed for the elections from the government. He said, “The commission is happy to say that it has received from government all the funds required to conduct the 2015 general elections. “We can say that funding is no longer a challenge to the forthcoming elections.” He however refused to disclose the amount collected by his commission.
