The Indian Act needs to be overhauled. Its only purpose is to administer Canadas Treaty responsibilities to the First Nations, not completely control every aspect of how we govern ourselves. We need a true democratic system of government on every Rez. The Indian Act limits our economic growth and keeps us as welfare states dependent on government handouts. A band in northern Alberta has millions in Oil Sands money in the bank and yet, everyone in that community still lives in poverty. Something is wrong with that system.
