The Institute of Computer Science at the University of Göttingen invites applications for the position of a Early Stage Researcher (ESR) fellowship (PhD position) within the CleanSky Initial Training Network (ITN), to be funded by the Marie Curie Actions of the 7th Framework Programme of the European Commission. The recruited ESR will conduct PhD studies at the University of Göttingen located in Göttingen, Germany, visit other nodes for secondments, and attend the training events of the network. The position is fully funded (100% employment) according to the Marie Curie programme, which offers highly competitive and attractive salary and working conditions. Detailed information and the application portal can be found at the website of the ITN: cleansky-itn.eu As a new paradigm for information technology (IT), cloud computing is “a model for enabling ubiquitous, convenient, on-demand network access to a shared pool of configurable computing resources (e.g., networks, servers, storage, applications, and services) that can be rapidly provisioned and released with minimal management effort or service provider interaction.” Cloud computing is evolving and supported not only in small data centers but also over large scale, energy-efficient new computing infrastructures. Example scenarios of large-scale cloud computing include scientific computing and telecommunication services, where big data and traffic are generated and need to be processed in a cost- efficient manner. CleanSky ITN aims to develop innovative ideas in the emerging areas within the “eco-system” of cloud computing: data center evolution, consolidation and service migration, and beyond, via structural training of young researchers. PhD Project Description: For energy saving among multiple data centers, the prevalent approach is to periodically consolidate the IT infrastructure to a smaller number of locations, and mostly through manual determination of an IT transformation plan by using simple rules of thumb. This project will develop an automatic consolidation algorithm which accounts for various aspects of data centers, including energy, costs and resource utilization. The selected applicant will conduct his/her PhD studies in the PhD programme in Computer Science (PCS) at the University of Göttingen. Applicants should inform themselves about the program. Founded in 1737, Georg-August-Universität Göttingen is a research university of international renown with strong focuses in research-led teaching. The University is distinguished by the rich diversity of its subject spectrum particularly in the humanities, its excellent facilities for the pursuit of scientific research, and the outstanding quality of the areas that define its profile. From 2007 to 2012 Georg- August-Universität Göttingen was rewarded funding from the Initiative of Excellence of the German Federal and State Governments with its institutional strategy for the future entitled “Göttingen.Tradition – Innovation – Autonomy”. The University was able to realise all measures of the concept. Now Göttingen University will develop the successfully established measures further to continously advance the University’s positive developments in research and teaching. Applicant Profile: - An excellent Master degree in computer science or equivalent - Good knowledge of computer networks and distributed systems - Ability and motivation to conduct high-quality research, including publishing the results in relevant venues - Excellent analytical abilities - Good programming skills and knowledge of evaluation methods - Working experience in the area of cloud computing is advantageous - Very good communication skills (both written and oral) in English #PhD #Research #Cloud #Computing #Scholarship
