The Institute of Education Sciences has set up the "What Works Clearinghouse", aimed at compiling all of the best teaching methods and materials, based upon controlled studies. A few things that they have found: * Choice of course materials can make as much difference as the teacher. * Up to 90% of programs that seemed promising in small studies, when tested further, had no effect or made achievement scores worse. Surprisingly, 42% of school districts had never heard of the clearinghouse. Make sure your district knows about it.
