The Institute of Latin American Studies at Stockholm University and Arbetarnas Bildningsförbund (The Workers Educational Association) invite you to a seminar on Movements Across the Border in Times of Growing Nationalism Labour, Women, Migrants and the Struggle for Rights at the US-Mexican Frontier Dreams of welfare and a more descent life, but also illegality and criminality, characterize la línea, the worlds most intense zone of trans-boundary trafficking, stretching 3000 km between Mexico and the United States. The large-scale drug trade which takes place across this vast frontier area is often used as a bat in the debate among those in the U.S. who want to put an end to the entry of undocumented immigrants. At the same time, the growing power of the mafia implies that cross-border trafficking turns increasingly dangerous. In this seminar, the panelists discuss different expressions of the Movement across the Border, focusing on cross-border relationships for labor and women as well as on the diverse nascent forms of humanitarian assistance which address those migrants who are either stuck attempting to cross the border or are cyclically being deported. Growing nationalism and racism confront the migrants on the other side. Which are the possibilities and challenges that follow in the wake of migration? Panelists Edmé Domínguez, assistant professor in Peace and Development Research, with a focus on Latin American Studies, School of Global Studies, Gothenburg University. Erik de la Reguera, journalist who has recently published the book Gränsbrytarna. Commentator Luz Paula Parra-Rosales, affiliated researcher at the Institute of Latin American Studies, Stockholm University. She has a PhD in Peace and Conflict Research from Bradford University, United Kingdom. She is visiting lecturer in the Master Program of Humanitarian Action at Uppsala University and affiliated professor at the Center for Teaching and Research in Economics (CIDE) in Mexico City.
