The Italian Bride, is one of a few famous Chicagoland lady ghosts in white. Many sightings have been reported of a woman in a wedding dress and veil walking in the area near her life like statue in Mount Carmel Cemetery in Hillside , IL. Over the years multiple nearby residents have also described hearing sobbing and/or wailing that could not be traced to a living person and smelling the distinct aroma of roses in the general area of the Buccola memorial. Julia Buccola Petta died in child birth in 1921. She was buried in a family plot in Mount Carmel in her wedding dress with her dead infant laid to rest in her arm next to her. Julias mother Filomena began having nightmares that her daughter was begging her to dig up her grave. Filomena suffered these dreams for some time before finally consulting a priest who helped her have the body exhumed. When they opened the coffin in 1927, six years later, Julias body was perfectly preserved, looking as if no time had passed since they had laid her to rest. However, the infant next to her was now only skeletal remains. The answer to the question of why Julias body remained pristine has ever since been pondered. The family believing that it was a miracle, collected money to build the memorial that stands today. The photos here show the impressive statue of Julia in her bridal gown and the two porcelain portraits on the memorial. One of Julia on her wedding day, the other post mortem photo of Julia in her casket after her exhumation in 1927.
