The Jackson 5 became the first group in the Rock era to have their first three releases reach #1 in the U.S. when The Love You Save hit the top of both the Billboard Hot 100 and The Cash Box best sellers list on June 27, 1970. It was a #7 smash in the UK as well. The opening exclamation of stop and the footstomps that complement the rhythm during the latter part of the song are allusions to the 1965 #1 Motown single by The Supremes, Stop! In the Name of Love. The Jackson 5 essentially replaced The Supremes as Motowns main focus in the early 1970s, although Diana Ross, who left the group for a solo career not long before the release of this single, was publicized as having discovered the Jackson 5.
