The Japanese Police nationwide Spring Traffic Safety Campaign is currently underway and will continue until April 15th. During this time, personnel can expect to see additional mobile and stationary police patrols on roadways, concealed positions, and intersections. The campaign theme for 2014 is prevention of traffic accidents involving children and senior citizens. Some additional things to look out for are: -- All passengers in a vehicle must wear seatbelts. -- Ensure proper use of child seats. -- Do not drink and drive. Vehicle passengers are also responsible to ensure drivers do not operate a motor vehicle if they have been drinking; driver and passengers can be charged and fined for DUI. -- Prevent accidents involving scooters and motorcycles. Ride carefully and wear protective gear to reduce injuries in case of an accident. -- Know which lanes are dedicated for motorcycles only; i.e. on Route 58, motorcycles are only allowed in the left lane. -- In most areas, bicyclists must ride along the left side of the road. When this is not possible, they need to slow down and provide the right of way to pedestrians when riding on sidewalks.
