The Jorhat stadium which is being constructed, is having many technical defects, which caught my eye while I visited the stadium in 2012. The roof was being installed at that time and even a common man having the minimum basic ideas of construction would have told what was wrong with the installation of the roof of the galleries. Firstly (1) The roof was installed sloping inside, i.e., the slope of the roof was facing the playground, which would give rise to two problems- (a) the spectators sitting at the outer rows of the stands will be unable to have a view of the playground or therefore any sports action whatsoever; all he sees is the tin roof in front of him, (b) again this is a technical blunder - the very reason the level of the playing turf raised by filling with soil, sand-gravel, was to facilitate the quick drainage rain water to outside of the stadium. Now if the roof slanting towards inside experiences a downpour, all the rain water falling on the roof will again be directed inside towards the ground. Secondly (2) there are too many concrete pillars in the front side of the stands, installed for holding the roof above, which hinders the wholesome view of the playground, very often if any action was going on! Any modern stadium you come across now a days do not have large pillars or pillars of any sort, to obstruct the view of the spectators from action on the ground. They are designed to hold the whole roof from the rear of the stands. Now, the question is, how on earth an important stadium of Upper Assam is being constructed with so many defects. Did they not plan the construction of the stadium with proper design and definite objectives? Or did they not have any experts to look into the works of construction and its progress? It was as if they had the funds for the work and just for the sake of spending the money they could put in anything, whether it worked or not, without any concerns whatsoever of the responsibility to provide amenities to the the society to cherish, as a whole, and to the sports lovers in particular.
