The Kelcie Chronicles - For those of you following Miss Sassy - TopicsExpress

The Kelcie Chronicles - For those of you following Miss Sassy Pants, I wanted to update you on her medical issues. She has one more surgery ahead of her that we thought would be at the end of August. Belly Babies (those with intestinal issues) often have a difficult time gaining weight until they have this final surgery to reconnect everything. The surgery is often done earlier than ideal circumstances because they dont want long-term growth further inhibited. When Kelcie visited with her surgical team on Friday, she showed that being at home (complete with middle of the night feedings from Nana) was doing her body good. She was up to ten pounds and gained an inch to 22 1/2 inches in the two weeks home. So, they are postponing the surgery until the end of September. The bigger the baby, the more ideal the conditions are for surgery. We are thrilled that she is doing well but a little deflated that out closure on this is pushed back. It has thrown all of our best laid plans (i.e. work schedules/child care) out the window. She has some special needs until the surgery that makes outside child care not optimal. I am currently working with GBS on more time off and they have been great with this recent turn. We also had to be hit with the reality of this surgery. The surgeons anticipate a four hour surgery and one surgeon said this wont be easy. She will be three times the size since her last surgery and not nearly as sick. The time at home now is crucial because it is believed to strengthen the babys fight. She knows what life is now and is developing relationships. I guess I did not think Kelcie could increase her fight drive - she is already Wonder Woman to me. We have faith in her surgeons. The rock star surgeon that we lucked into the first time around will hopefully be able to head up this one. He is primarily stationed out of Comer and just happened to be on call at Evanston Hospital on Easter Sunday when she was operated on the first time. We have every belief that Kelcies journey will have its happy ending. It is just going to be about six weeks later than we thought and she has one more large battle to fight. This time, she is bigger and stronger and the surgery is controlled by when the surgeons think it is best to operate.
