The King City Police Department is participating in Operation Ceasefire, which is a program funded under Cal-Grip 6. All four south county cities’ police departments participate in the program that works to give members of rival Norteño and Sureño gangs the opportunity to sign up for services that could lead to stopping the violence in King City and other south county cities. Officials in Salinas and Oxnard area have used the Ceasefire model to reduce gang violence by presenting gang members with an ultimatum: give up criminal ways or face prosecution and hard time. Those who take part in the program are offered employment opportunities, training and personal services – from resume building to tattoo removal.
