The Komen 5k has always been an important one to us. We have walked in it for many years to remember, support and celebrate the people we love. In 2012 we walked just 2 days after my last chemo treatment to celebrate. This year we are walking to celebrate Haley. As many of you are aware I have the BRCA gene which greatly increased my risk of getting breast cancer (it was 80% higher than a normal persons chances). My mom also has the gene and it can be, and obviously is, hereditary. Because of this, Brad and I took an unconventional route to get pregnant with Haley. We had embryos frozen before my chemo treatment began 3 years ago in case we ever needed them in the future. We didnt need to use them, but made the decision to. Because of the research done over the years and science available to us, we found out we were able to test the embryos we had for the BRCA gene. Out of the 5 tested, 2 didnt have the gene. Our second try of IVF worked and we were beyond blessed to know that when Haley came into this world, she would come into it without the increased risk of breast cancer and without the BRCA gene. We were able to effectively stop this gene from continuing in our family tree. This year we are walking to celebrate several things. My mom, who is over 22 years cancer free. Myself, at over 2 years cancer free. And for Haley, who will hopefully never have to say she is cancer free, only that she is BRCA free. Please join us at the walk next Sunday, September 28th at Fashion Island for the 9:45am 5k.
