The Labrador Fire is burning south and west of the Illinois River in an inaccessible area 30 miles southwest of Grants Pass, Oregon. The fire has spread into the Kalmiopsis Wilderness. Fire behavior was somewhat mitigated yesterday due to the stagnant air and the smoke effectively shading the fire area. According to Brett Fillis, Incident Commander, “We have not seen what this fire is capable of yet since the smoke until now kept the fire in check”. With warmer temperature and changing weather we expect more active surface fire spread over the next several days with flare-ups, torching, and spotting up to ½ mile. The structure protection at Oak Flat in Josephine County is nearly complete and fire fighters remain spike camped in the area in case they are needed. Oak Flat is still under a Level 2 or “advisory evacuation”. This is not a mandatory evacuation but if the hazard increases this could change. Crews continue to improve roads and remove brush and woody debris along contingency fire lines. A public meeting will be held at the Josephine County building at 102 South Redwood Highway in Cave Junction at 7pm Thursday August 1.
