The Lantern Festival, Martinmas In Steiner Waldorf schools - TopicsExpress

The Lantern Festival, Martinmas In Steiner Waldorf schools around the world, November is a time we remember St Martin, the patron saint of beggars, the homeless and the poor. The story of how St Martin gave half of his cloak to a homeless man on a cold wintery night is shared with the children. Children and parents gather together with their handmade lanterns, often decorated with stars and moons and suns. The candles are lit, symbolic of the light of each individual child. The sense of excitement, walking together in community, the feeling of awe and wonder of this festival is deeply bonding. Walking into the cold wintry night, walking into the darkness with our individual lights, we get to experience a moment of connection within ourselves and each other. Connecting to the light of humankind, the mood is held quietly and with reverence. The moment is magical - the kindling of our inner light as we take steps into the darkness of the wintery months ahead. If you have been part of a lantern walk, we would love to hear from you.
