The Last GSSO Old Boys’ meeting for the year started at about 3:45pm on Sunday, Nov 16, 2014 at NINEV Events Centre (beside Welcome Centre) on Airport Road. The facility is owned by Arc. Chima Chijioke, an OGSSIAN. After minutes of the last meeting was read, the President read parts of recommendations made by the tink-tank group appointed to chart the course for a New OGSSIAN Project. They committee submitted that instead of the current number of 3,600 students studying in Government Sec Sch, Owerri, the State government should build Government Secondary Schools in the three senatorial zones of the state and reduce the already over-crowded students and over-used facilities. We can now have other satellite schools campuses and still retain her name; GSSO ie…. Govt. Sec. Sch. Owerri, Govt. Sec. Sch. Orlu and Govt. Sec. Sch. Okigwe. Other noble ideas proposed by the committee shall be deliberated upon when the chapter reconvene in January. In this pitched-season of intense politics and politicking, Mr. Eustace, an Old Boy and author of many books who presented a talk, noted that as OGSSIANS, it looks as if we are disadvantaged in the politics of our land because we were groomed to be gentle, cool and calm. He said that this trend has now become a critical issue because tender hands cannot take the reign of power anywhere, whether in politics or by military might. Hence, he strongly suggested we should now employ a part of our lyrics,”to do or to die for the right” in Nigeria’s political terrain. He said that we should not only fish in corporate waters (where we are already marginally proving our mettle) but should also stick out our neck now in politics. He said that if any OGSSIAN is vying for any position and we know him as honest, we should all support him than have a divisive mentality against our own stating that it is only then that GSSO can become a brand, a force where kingmakers and leaders are harnessed. The President noted that even though we want to do our best in Nigeria but the system will not allow us to because of corruption. On a casual note, he quipped, “please do not stick out your neck because if you do, they will cut it off and your family will rue your departure”.
