The League of Drumlines: I can imagine a year round after school program that offers a fun diversion for as many as 10,000 pre-teens and teenagers, and that fosters healthy competition AND teamwork, while at the same time giving the kids a skillset that will provide them with college scholarships. What could do this? How about a League of Drumlines that are not affiliated with any particular school? Kinda like the private cheer squads and gymnastics teams that compete for world championships. To combat the boredom and lack of diversion that contributes to youth delinquency, a city like Memphis would benefit from a league of 100 high quality DCI-like drum squads, each with an A,B,C, & D line each. High school and college level music students could be paid to teach, run, and rehearse the lines. And, older persons could serve as coaches and mentors just like little league sports coaches do now.
