The Library of Congress hosted a five-day festival marking the centenary of Irving Fine last week. Charles T. Downey and I reviewed the culminating concerts, which included a world premiere of a piano quintet by Jefferson Friedman (as played by Simone Dinnerstein and the Chiara Quartet) and the choir of Clare College, Cambridge singing the one Fine piece that is, to me, like a Proustian madeleine: the Alice in Wonderland songs we sang when I was in middle school. Add Ceremony of Carols and it was a real trip down memory lane. Ron Banyay, I never realized how hard the piano part in Father William is until Saturday night. I spared Washington Post readers, and the pianist, the observation that Mr. Banyay played it much better.
