The Lion and the Jewel - #KongiAt80 This comical play is about Sidi, the village beauty and her dramatic relationship with Lakunle, the school teacher. Lakunle refuses to pay her bride price because he believes that this local tradition as well as many other traditional practices of the village, are outdated. This young suitor is contrasted with Baroka, the village chief, who also courts Sidi. He in contrast doesnt believe in modernity but maintains the age old traditions of the village. Beyond the humor, rich dance and costume, the play has as its central theme, the contrasts, tensions and contentions that change breeds. It subtly reminds us that for Change to achieve the desired impact, it needs to be wisely managed. In this play, which is one of Wole Soyinkas most popular and loved, conflicts between positions of power and the commoner, the old versus the young and tradition versus modernity, are visibly contrasted. Well, who in the end wins Sidis hand in marriage? Find out in this hilarious production showing at 3:00p.m. and 6:00p.m. on July 26th & August 2nd 2014 at Freedom Park and August 23rd and 30th 2014 at Terrakulture.
