The Lunar Nodes (This is some material from the forthcoming Astrology of Awakening Volume 2, which will be out next spring.) The Lunar Nodes play a major role in just about any form of evolutionary or spiritual astrology, and rightfully so. They are indispensable, and clarify much of the spiritual work an evolving ego takes on in a particular lifetime. We can understand them within the context of awakening detailed in this approach. Simply stated, the Moon is the “seed”, the Nodes the “gardening”, and the Sun is the “flower.” What exactly are the Nodes? They are the points of intersection of the Moon with the ecliptic, the revolutionary path around the Sun. As the Moon orbits the Earth, the South Node is the point where it travels from above to below the Earth’s ecliptic, and the North Node is where the Moon ascends from below to above. Note the theme of reaching down (South), as in retrieving from the past, to rising up (North) into new and innovative uses. The Nodes indicate the points of intersection—how the emotional basin of the past (Moon) connects with the present reality (Sun) as we travel through life in manifest form (the Earth’s motion around the ecliptic). The Nodes of Moon pertain to the resolution of the Moon itself. From the deep well of absorbed experience, particular spiritual work is taken on for greater attendance. Central to the approach here is to highlight this crucial connection, which is not found in much of the available astrological literature. The reason for this is the perpetuation of the conventional approach to the Sun and Moon (complementary pair, yang/yin) which undercuts the depth of the Moon, as well as the reach of the Sun. By integrating a spiritual perspective, our understanding of the Nodes broadens significantly. As we mature, the evolving ego (Moon) chooses various interests or areas as part of its curriculum. To follow this analogy, the South Node is what we are majoring in. We become interested in certain themes, dynamics or spiritual work that we’d like to focus on. Some want to become artists, others philosophers and others may be interested in areas of self-improvement. The astrology system conveys 12 broad archetypal fields for us to learn in. Since the Moon starts out in unconsciousness, we have not received an “A” in this curriculum yet. In fact, most of us have injected a whole lot of egoic distortion into the South Node, which makes sense because we all start out as spiritual children. And here’s the pivotal issue: Should we “move away” from what we’ve been majoring in, or learn to do it more consciously? The great departure of this approach, compared to some other types of evolutionary astrology, is to assertively advocate the more awakened potentials of the South Node. The tendency to want to move away from our unconsciousness is yet another strategy of avoidance. Sure, part of us may want to abandon what is familiar in order to go on to new vistas, but to promote greater spiritual maturity, we finish the work we started, get an “A”, and graduate. Since the South Node has remnants of unconsciousness, it is doing some degree of the darker or shadow components of the signature (and attendant factors). The missing elements are provided by the North Node as it is coming from the polar opposite place. Development of the North Node balances the tendencies and proclivities of the South. Think of a see-saw. We initially sit on one side (South Node) and can be bogged down there. We develop the other (North Node) and attain balance. To maintain equilibrium, we don’t sit on the new side and weigh that down. Rather, we have the see-saw reach a state of harmony between the sides. Not only does the North Node helps the South get the “A”, it brings it to an entirely new dimension! This is where the magic happens. Unbeknownst to the evolving ego, concerted effort to develop the North Node will provide unforeseen skills and attributes that will take the South Node further than what was previously imagined.
