The MOE is mobilizing 50,000+ student and staff volunteers to assist with flood relief efforts. *** PRESS RELEASE MINISTRY OF EDUCATION MOEs POST-FLOODS OPERATION INVOLVING 50,000 VOLUNTEERS The Ministry of Education (MOE) has in place plans for apost-floods operation to assist the victims of the recent floods. The operation will involve more than 50,000 volunteers, consisting of students as well as staff of both public and private higher education institutions (HEIs). According Dato Seri Idris Jusoh, Minister of Education II, This is a historical moment as it involves bringing together the expertise and strength of resources within our HEIs on alarge scale to assist victims of the floods. The Minister also noted that the efforts are part of the MOEs social responsibility for the nation. The operation will be carried out in stages and begin on the 1st of January 2015 and continue for a month in conjunction with the first semester break of the 2014/2015 academic year. Yayasan Sukarelawan Siswa (YSS) as well as students and staff from local polytechnics as well as community colleges will also be contributing and participating in the operation. The main focus will be to clean up schools as well as the homes of flood victims. Expert assistance will be provided to help with the restoration of water sources, building of washrooms and sanitary outlets, and fixing of electrical wiring. Health check-ups services will also be provided. Students interested to register as volunteers can contact their respective student affairs offices, YSS, or the Malaysian Universities Volunteers Council (MASKUM). According to Dato Seri Zaini Ujang, MOE’s Secretary-General II, the Ministry hopes that the mobilization of HEI students and staff will alleviate the suffering of the flood-victims and provide much needed help. He also stated that the Ministry of Education will be coordinating the operations activities and location together with the National Security Council (NSC) and related agencies involved in flood relief efforts.
