The Making of a Leader (Part 16) In John Maxwell’s book, “The 21 Indispensable Qualities of a Leader”, positive attitude is listed as a leadership quality and so in this article, I will focus on positive attitude and its importance to leadership. What is Positive Attitude? According to Wikipedia, “Positive mental attitude (PMA) is the philosophy that having an optimistic disposition in every situation in ones life attracts positive changes and increases achievement. It employs a state of mind that continues to seek, find and execute ways to win, or find a desirable outcome, regardless of the circumstances. It opposes negativity, defeatism and hopelessness.” According to Wade Boggs, “A positive attitude causes a chain reaction of positive thoughts, events and outcomes. It is a catalyst and it sparks extraordinary results.” Why is Positive Attitude Important? A positive mental attitude is a must for every leader as it is often the difference between success and failure. American professional basketball executive, Pat Riley said, “If you have a positive attitude and constantly strive to give your best effort, eventually you will overcome your immediate problems and find you are ready for greater challenges.” And according to American life coach, Anthony Robbins, “Our beliefs about what we are and what we can be precisely determine what we can be.” A positive attitude enables a leader to cope with the challenges he or she is bound to face on the road to vision accomplishment. It ensures that a leader remains optimistic in the face of trials. David was a man with a positive attitude; one time his two wives were taken captive, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess and Abigail the widow of Nabal the Carmelite. And David was greatly distressed because the people spoke of stoning him, for all the people were embittered, each one because of his sons and his daughters who were also taken captive. However, the Bible records that David encouraged himself in the LORD his God; as a result of this he was able to find a way out of the challenge. When a leader has a positive attitude, he or she is able to see the bright side of life and expect the best to happen even in the worst situations. A leader with a positive attitude is able to think constructively and creatively and has the energy to accomplish his goals. With a positive mental attitude in place, a leader will not quit at the first sign of opposition. Also, people who possess a positive attitude do not dwell on problems, rather they seek for solutions, and they are also able to see opportunities when others see crisis. They are believers in themselves and their abilities and they are able to inspire and motivate themselves and others; as a result of this, people usually love and respect them. In conclusion, Pastor J. Sidlow Baxter said, “What is the difference between an obstacle and an opportunity? Our attitude toward it. Every opportunity has a difficulty, and every difficulty has an opportunity.” #eturuvieerebor #takingtheleadseminars
