The Many Different Faces Of Chaining. Warning: Some of these photos may be too graphic for you to view. Most of these photos were taken from the website of Dogs Deserve Better. But we just wanted to address the issue that many folks have brought up about the picture of the dog in our previous post and how the dog was emaciated. Yes, it is definitely true that not all chained dogs are skin and bones. Many are well fed. In fact, we rescued a big fat pitbull from a chain in Weaverville a few weeks ago (at the request of her former owner) and she was quite robust- she was also heartworm positive- like so many chained dogs are. But not all chained dogs are starved....and just to be clear, we are not recommending crating a chained dog as the only alternative for tethering. There are many different alternatives and each situation is different. A fence isnt always the answer, because, like so many people mentioned here, there are many dogs who will climb a fence and then are at risk of being killed by a car. I believe what we can all agree on is that this is a complex issue with real concerns (from both pro-tethering folks and anti-tethering folks) and it, at the very least, deserves an open, transparent, thoroughly informed discussion, so we- as a community- can do the right thing for the animals. We thank everyone for their comments as we really want to hear from all sides. Here is the link to the poll if you would like to participate https://surveymonkey/s/958FQH2
