The Masuda Legacy By Melissa Bruce Looking at sickly, poor Isamu Masuda as a young boy in post-war Japan, no one would predict that he would grow to found the fastest growing company in the history of Japan. His father had been killed in the war, his mother held a dead-end job to scrounge enough to feed her family, and on top of that, he was chronically ill. But at night, when his mother put him to bed, she would tell him, “You can have anything, if you live a balanced life.” These words did not produce immediate results. He did not stand out in school or sports. He was just one of thousands working their day-to-day lives, doing what they think is the best they can do. But his life changed suddenly and dramatically with the birth of his first son. Masuda’s tiny baby was born with defects to his body that could hamper his entire life. Masuda blamed his own unhealthy lifestyle for his son’s condition. He set about then to change that lifestyle, and he remembered the words of his mother, entreating him to live a balanced life. He knew his health was out of balance, and he researched ways to change that. He came up with a magnetic insole with bumps that correlated to pressure points in the feet. Door to door, he sold his insoles with great success. People felt his sincerity and experienced positive, sometimes dramatic results from his product. In time, Masuda expanded both his product line and his business model, always with the thought of a balanced life in mind. He wanted to help others achieve their optimum health – healthy bodies, healthy minds, healthy families, healthy finances and healthy societies. From his humble beginnings, Masuda climbed to the top of the business world. But even after finding such great financial success for himself, it was his gentle, genuine love he was best known for. He believed in people, he cared about people and he believed that anyone could find the same results he did, if only they sought after and lived a balanced life.
