The Mechanicsville Local From Jason T. Williams, Battalion Chief, public information officer, Hanover Fire-EMS Department: Chesterfield, Hanover, Henrico, Richmond -- The first big snow event of 2014 is heading our way. The Metro Richmond Fire Departments would like to emphasized the following safety items: Be prepared -- Check your emergency kit to make sure you have a three-day supply of food, water and medication on hand. Use space heaters with care -- Always maintain a three-foot clearance around all space heaters. Unplug or turn off heaters when leaving a room. Never use an oven or stove to heat a home. Carbon monoxide is a silent killer -- Never use a generator, grill, camp stove or other gasoline, propane, natural gas or charcoal burning devices inside a home, garage, basement, crawlspace or any partially enclosed area. Locate unit away from doors, windows and vents that could allow carbon monoxide to come indoors. Discard ashes with care -- Never discard hot ashes from a fireplace inside or near the home. Place them in a metal container outside and well away from the house. Emergency lighting -- Use battery-powered flashlights or lanterns in the event of a power outage. Never use candles or other open flames for lighting. Stay heart safe -- Shoveling snow can place a tremendous strain on the heart. Work slowly. Take frequent breaks. If you are at home alone, let someone know where you are and check in frequently. Chesterfield Fire and EMS, Hanover Fire and EMS, Henrico County Division of Fire, and Richmond Fire and Emergency Services wants everyone to stay safe during snow storm Janus.
