The Men’s 1st Team made the most of their three games in Ireland over the weekend. Carrying what was very much a development squad, they lost their Saturday morning game 3-0 to English giants Southgate before a 4-4 draw with Doncaster in the afternoon. On Sunday they fought out a 1-1 draw with hosts Cookstown. “The focus was on bringing newer players into the group and continuing all the good work we have done so far in pre-season,” said Harry. “Against Doncaster we were 4-1 up then made some changes to have a look at a few people. Both Southgate and Cookstown are top sides and we got great workouts against them. “All in all it was a very positive weekend with the younger players making great progress and integrating well with the regular guys. The atmosphere was great and I’m really pleased with where we are right now especially as we have a number of senior players to come back in and strengthen the squad further.” Western finish their pre-season this weekend with games against Edinburgh University on Saturday and Preston on Sunday, both at Peffermill. The 3s and 4s took the opportunity to have a look at the youngsters they will run with this year in an enjoyable game at Auchenhowie. The 4s eventually ran out 4-2 winners despite being 2-1 down at half-time. This promises to be a very exciting season for our development teams as this excellent crop of juniors begin to make their mark. The 5s beat the 6s 1-0 in a decent game as both teams gear up for Saturday’s league openers. westernwildcats.co.uk/news/2013/default.aspx#news70880
