The Mercy Brown Vampire Incident This story takes place in Exeter, Rhode Island in 1892. The Brown family were being killed off by the disease, tuberculosis. The first was the mother, Mary, then the eldest daughter,and then the younger sister, Mercy died from the disease.The townspeople started to talk. They told the father, George Brown that he would have to exhume the bodies of his decreased wife and daughters. They believed that one of the deceased was actually a vampire and George being distraught went along with the plan. So in March 17, 1892, George and other villagers went to the cemetery of the Baptist Church in Exeter and dug up the bodies. His wife Mary and Mary Olive were both pretty much decomposed but when they looked at Mercys body she was unchanged! Panic spread and Mercys heart was removed, her body burnt and its said that her ashes and water were mixed together and given to her sick brother, Edwin to drink in order to be saved. The villagers had believed that Edwin would have survived but sadly he died two months later. Thats the tale of Mercy Brown, the young girl who died at age 19 from tuberculosis and then after death since she never did decomposed and her hair and nails grew, she was called a vampire. There are reasons why she never did decompose like the cold New England air had froze her body but the supernatural aspect still stands out to readers. Another thing about this strange mystery is that Mercys ghost is said to haunt the cemetery!
