The Miserable Indian Medical Graduate Still remember the day when the PMT results came out, that then was the best day of my life, the reason: “I’ll become a Doctor”. But, till today after about a year since I got my MBBS degree, I’m NOT a doctor and hence, I prefer to call myself the Indian Medical Graduate. All who are not aware of the current circumstances might be wondering why such a statement and why I, the Indian Medical Graduate, have such a sentiment. To start off let me introduce myself: I’m that student in every class who has always been among the toppers, who from the very childhood wanted to wear the “white-coat”, whose eyes lit up when he could explain some basics of human physiology from Bio-books. Yes, I’m that “bright” student who wanted to be a doctor and worked tirelessly to get through PMT so that he could fulfil his dream of being a doctor someday. I’m also that friend in your circle who was the rarest kind and sometimes labelled as memorizer since, I loved Biology and could remember all the weird scientific names of bugs and fishes which actually in most cases doesn’t have any relation to Medical Science. And yes, I’m that 25 year old who still survives on the money of his parents and is the most unsocial being. Hope, now you know who I’m.. My Miserable Situation: This is the cause of a number of situations which has led to where I’m standing today. The PG Race: PG or Post Graduation in Medical Science is THE way of Specialised training when a MBBS Doctor under the guidance of seniors in the field gains more in-depth knowledge of a certain speciality. Does that mean that a MBBS graduate is incompetent? The answer is NO. During the course of 5.5 years a medical student studies all the subjects and is trained to treat and manage all basic and major illnesses that occurs in a life-time. But, then why doesn’t he do that simply can be asked by many. The answer here is even if he wants to do that he won’t be allowed to by patients, since, doctors are now service providers and the customers(patients) prefer or demand EXPERT opinion, and everyone wants to be treated by a “Specialist” even for common cold. This is the reason, when a young MBBS graduate comes home, his own relatives bombard him with questions like tu kis chiz ka doctor hain (what speciality do you treat?). Then there are the informed lot, who ask or rather suggest tu cardiologist ban ja (you should become a cardiologist) But, they don’tunderstand or rather know the fact that becoming a cardiologist is a long process and requires us to cross the mountain called PGET. To better explain the situation refer the attached picture. Every year 40,000+ medical students graduate and there are only 18,260 PG seats. This difference has resulted in a backlog of repeaters and hence for 2013 PG admissions total candidates was approx. 1lac. And at this rate in 2015 the applicants would be 1.4 lacs for those 18k seats. And this is THE reason why MBBS graduates sit at home preparing for one of the toughest exams that there can be. The NEET Drama: To reduce corruption and increase chances of merit over money, MCI wanted a single entrance exam but, that too was ripped off by the Supreme Court since the Pvt. colleges wanted separate exams and admission rules for themselves for obvious reasons. Hence, we are again back to square one with even less seats up for merit, since, a big chunk shall go to Management Quota. So, if India doesn’t have enough PG seats can’t one specialise from Abroad? The answer to this is again No. Because our mighty country doesn’t recognise foreign degrees now. So, if you go outside, don’t come back, is what our Govt. says. They are now contemplating to even change that and turn us into Bonded Labors by enforcing a Judicial Bond of huge sum of money to all those who want to go abroad, which says that after our stint abroad we should come back and again become MBBS doctors. So, what should I do? sit at home? go abroad? or just forget that I once was a Medical Graduate.. I’m a Indian Medical Graduate and this is my story !! Shared by our member
