The Modern Cultural History Workshop of the Cambridge History Faculty meets for the last time this term on Tuesday 11 March. As usual, it will be at 5.00pm in the Junior Parlour of Gonville & Caius College. This week we will be hearing from Martyn Everett of the Anarchist Research Group, his paper is entitled: ‘From the barricades to the classroom: Louise Michel’s Anarchist School in London, 1890-1892’. See below for abstract. As usual, the c.30 minute paper will be followed by a discussion over wine, soft drinks, and snacks. All are warmly welcomed. We hope to see many of you there for an interesting talk and discussion, Laura Carter ([email protected]) From the barricades to the classroom: Louise Michel’s Anarchist School in London, 1890-1892 This talk outlines the life of Louise Michel, from childhood to the barricades of the Paris Commune, her subsequent exile in New Caledonia for eight years, and her school in London, before examining her anarchist ideas on education. It is an exciting account that briefly outlines Louise Michels life, her involvement in the Paris Commune, her subsequent exile in New Caledonia and her revolutionary activity after her return to France. Louise eventually settled in London where she opened a school for the children of political refugees. I describe the school and some of the people involved with it including William Morris, Walter Crane, former communards, several early Fabians, and at least one police spy who was responsible for the schools closure. Lastly I examine Louise Michels pedagogical ideas and techniques.
