The Murder of a Father: A rake, short for rakehell, is a Victorian term applied to a man who is habituated to immoral conduct, frequently a heartless womaniser. Often a rake was a prodigal who wasted his (usually inherited) fortune on gambling, wine, women and song, incurring lavish debts in the process. The rake was also frequently a man who seduced a young woman and impregnated her before leaving, often to her social or financial ruin. 20 year-old George Smith was such a rake, his father a thrifty, hard-working, successful property developer had spent years building up a very profitable business in Ilkeston, Derbyshire. He often tried to get his son involved in the business, but George preferred drink and loose women, whom he generally picked up at the local theatre. In May 1861, one of his many female acquaintances of the night claimed she was pregnant by him. George’s rich and equally arrogant friends tried to convince her to drop her claim, but when she refused, George, being the coward he was, dramatically vowed that he would flee to France in order to relieve himself of the ‘damned woman’s clutches.’ He got as far as Leicestershire, stayed there two days, and returned to Ilkeston, with his tail between his legs. Throughout this time George had nursed increasing hatred against his father for not giving him enough money, his father thought that he should work for it George thought he should be given it. His anger grew to such a degree that one night he returned home, after getting very drunk, and found his father dozing by the fire. He promptly woke him up and started a verbal assault about not having been given enough money. Suddenly, out of the blue, he pulled out a pistol from his pocket and shot his father dead. He was quickly arrested, put on trial and found guilty. George Smith was publicly hanged, outside Derby Prison, on this day 16th August 1861, in front a crowd in excess of 50,000, many of them travelling in special trains to see the spectacle. They were not disappointed as they witnessed a terrible execution; George Smith took 10 minutes to be strangled slowly to death.
