The NFL is a multi-billion dollar non-profit organization which relies greatly on licensed televised events with corporate sponsorship and therefore Nielsen ratings to make the non-profits. Money drives the decision making, nonetheless. It is even arguable that the recent botched response to domestic violence has more to do with concern over keeping good with an emerging market share: women. Reviewable evidence supports how the NFL pays officials to make bad calls in an attempt to shape the outcome of important(high Nielsen rating) games(FYI Nielsen ratings affect the cost of commercial time; higher ratings = more money). It can go both ways for any particular team and sometimes despite the NFLs attempt to change a games outcome the better team wins anyway(such as todays game). Super Bowl XL was the first time I noticed this trend, but last years NFC championship game was also severely corrupted(just ask any Forty Whiner). The clock errors are pretty blatant, and there is damning evidence at 13 minutes(Bowman clearly stripped the ball and lost his left knee in the process):
