The NWS in Des Moines is forecasting that very hot conditions will return to Central Iowa Monday with near-record temperatures of 95 to 100 degrees. Dew-point values will drop into the 50s to lower 60s which, combined with the temperatures, will allow relative humidity to drop 25 to 30 percent. These conditions will accelerate the onset of dehydration. If having to be outside, drink plenty of water, take frequent breaks, wear light/loose clothing and reschedule events to morning or evening hours if possible. Check on neighbors, elderly and make sure outdoor animals have access to shade and plenty of water. Do not leave children or pets in hot vehicles. A cold front will drop slowly through Iowa Monday and Tuesday, however the heat will likely persist across southern Iowa through Tuesday. In addition, The NWS says there will be an elevated wild fire danger Monday afternoon, especially across areas of central and southern Iowa where drought conditions have returned. The combination of low humidity, breezy southwest winds and dry vegetation could result in an ignited fire spreading rapidly.
