The National Academy of Sciences is an independent, scientific arm of advisors to the United States, but theyve also become a go-to for the chemical industry seeking to stall scientific findings from the EPA. Take formaldehyde, for instance. In 2011, the EPA released a report on formaldehyde that the academy criticized for being unclear. The EPA had linked the chemical to three rare forms of cancer, but industry asked the academy to review EPA findings. That review was completed last week, and the academy agreed with EPA scientists conclusion on formaldehyde. But that formaldehyde critique back in 2011 was enough for Congress to insist that the EPA redo 47 ongoing assessments of potentially toxic chemicals.
