The National Museum of Health and Medicine also has a long-standing interest in vector-borne diseases. Maj. Walter Reed, who became curator of the then-Army Medical Museum in 1893, conducted volunteer-based yellow fever studies in Cuba. These studies led to the discovery that yellow fever is a vector-borne disease, as it is transmitted by mosquito, which allowed for the effective treatment and prevention of the disease.
