The National Research Council (NRC) is the operating arm of the National Academy of Sciences, a private, nonprofit institution chartered by Congress in 1863 to provide science, technology, and health policy advice to the government. It is not part of the U.S. government. The National Research Council enlists leading scientists, engineers, and other experts to answer scientific and technical issues facing the United States and the world. Members of study committees serve as volunteers and are not paid for their service. The public gets conflicting information about GE crops. Proponents tout the benefits while opponents emphasize the risks. The NRC has formed a committed to study GE Crops. This study will provide an independent, objective assessment of what has been learned since GE crops were introduced. The results of the study will not be released until at least next spring. The first public meeting was this afternoon. Learn more about the study: nas-sites.org/ge-crops/
