The National Weather Service, Anchorage, has extended a fire - TopicsExpress

The National Weather Service, Anchorage, has extended a fire weather watch in the area, due to expire this evening, to noon Friday, and expanded it to cover much of south central Alaska. The new red flag warning goes into effect at 9 a.m. Tuesday. In the Susitna Valley, the watch calls for strong north winds to develop Tuesday evening, which will push relative humidity down. The 20-foot winds will be steady at 15 miles per hour, with gusts to 25 miles per hour. They are expected to diminish but remain gusty through Wednesday afternoon, but the humidity is expected to fall to 15 percent while temperatures reach into the upper 60s to low 70s. Typically, borough officials suspend all outdoor burn permits during a red flag warning, and in some cases impose a burn ban. While campfires and barbecues are allowed, they are not advised, and if used extra care should be exercised to keep them safe and contained. There are currently 15 active wildfires burning in Alaska, mostly in the areas between Tanacross and Delta Junction to the northwest of the Valley and south in the Kanai Peninsula.
