The New Common Sense 5 hours ago Here is one of the how to posts that Facebook thought you shouldnt have access to so they deleted it from my archives. It is a simple trip wire alarm device to use in your yard, or when you are out camping. I know there are other uses for it, but that is up to you and your imagination. Take a piece of wood that is 6 inches by 8 inches by 3/4 inches thick and screw a flat head screw 1 1/2 inches long about halfway through it 4 inches from one end in the middle of the board. Next get a tin can and a pair of tin snips and cut a strip from the can about 4 inches long and 1/2 inch wide. Now take a large nail and hammer and drive the nail through the strip of tin making a small hole through the tin near one end of it. Now you have a decision to make do you want your device to be battery powered or use the 120 VAC that you have in your house? Either way, you can take a 6 foot long extension cord and cut one strand of the wire in two about half way down the cord. Split the wire about 6 inches along the wire and remove about 1/2 inch from both the pieces you separated. Take one end of the striped wire and attach it to the flat head screw you put in the wood. If you have a soldering iron put a drop of solder on the connection. If not, just twist it really tight and wrap with electrical tape. Take the other end of the striped wire and twist it around a 3/4 inch long screw and put the screw into the hole in the metal strip you cut from the can. Screw in the screw on the metal strip into the piece of wood in line with the flat head screw already in the wood so that the metal strip is in contact with the top of the flat head screw and firmly against the wood at the other end. You now have a completed circuit in the extension cord. All you have to do is take a tongue depressor or Popsicle stick or even a piece of cardboard, punch a hole in it and tie a piece of string, fishing line or thread through the hole and place the insulator between the strip of tin can and the flat head screw. Being careful not to dislodge the insulator, run the fishing line about 6 inches above the ground across any likely travel paths. Plug a flood light into the female end of the cord and plug the other end into a wall outlet and bingo. you have a warning system that will let you know if someone is where they are not supposed to be. To use this alarm when camping, substitute a flashlight battery for the wall outlet and a flashlight bulb or buzzer for the flood light. This system can also be used to set off skyrockets or other things using a model rocket engine igniter. If you are using this outside place a piece of plastic over the board to protect it from rain and cover it with leaves to camouflage.
