The New York Outsider Art Fair 2014 opens this Thursday and continues until 11 May. Alongside the Fair, there will be numerous events, including a panel discussion on self-taught artist Jean-Michel Basquiat. The panel will re-evaluate the life and career of Basquiat, his poetic use of found materials, his embrace of heroic figures and the influence of Outsider artists on his work. Responding to Basquiats recent multimillion-dollar auction prices, the panel will also consider how the embrace and deification of the art market impacts self-taught artists and their place in history.
