The New York Times has published the mother of all damning - TopicsExpress

The New York Times has published the mother of all damning editorials about the Bangladesh political crisis in which it places all the blame at the prime minister Hasinas feet. This is just an early taster: Responsibility for this crisis sits squarely with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the leader of the Awami League party. Ms. Hasina seems determined to hang on to power in advance of general elections scheduled for January and to neutralize her opponents by any means necessary. There is much more meat, and it will not be pleasant reading for the Awami League. Whilst many of the criticisms in the editorial are justifiable - I am so pleased that it put emphasis on the independence of the Judiciary, a little talked about topic in Bangladesh - it does allow the BNP and Jamaat to get off inappropriately lightly. And, whilst criticising the International Crimes Tribunal is perfectly reasonable, it is I think not right to say so glibly claim that, The tribunal appears to be yet another tool to stifle political opponents. Perhaps the most explosive aspect of the editorial is that it raises at the end the possibility of sanctions on Bangladesh - which as far as I know has not been on the table. nytimes/2013/11/21/opinion/political-crisis-in-bangladesh.html?ref=opinion&gwh=84CE1E9C404AC57B73A1358D02964743
