The New York Times misses the point. No, this is not a fight over online control of Marxs works. It is a fight over a particular *translation.* It is the *translation* that is under copyright. Translation is hard work, and skilled work. Translators must be fluent in two languages (at least), be knowledgeable in the historical, cultural, literary, and other contexts, and be skilled writers as well. What they produce are new and in many respects unique works. Its not a hobby. Translating a single book is an enormous task, drawing on years of training and experience. Theyre supposed to do this for free? Even if youre a hardcore Communist, you cant have from each according to his abilities without to each according to his needs. Theres a word for that: stealing.
